During his senior year of high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Hobbs Kessler began to train with legendary coach Ron Warhurst and his group of athletes, including two-time Olympic medalist Nick Willis. In his first race of the indoor season, Hobbs broke both the 4-minute-mile and the national high school indoor record. When he demolished the national high school 1500m record outdoors – his 3:34.36 was faster than the NCAA record – he decided to forgo college. His first race as a professional was the U.S. Olympic Trials in June 2021, where he won his opening heat before finishing eighth in the semifinal at 1500m. Just last month, Kessler notched perhaps his biggest victory as a pro when he won the B.A.A. Invitational Mile, a road mile held in conjunction with the Boston Marathon, in 4.08.
Of Note: Before turning professional as a runner, Hobbs was a world-class rock climber, frequently representing the U.S. in international competitions.
